Image brightness

I've successfully converted a batch of short films but during testing I noticed that they seem noticeably darker onscreen than I'd expect from looking at the source files. I used the suggested Rec. 709 and made no other changes to the video settings. Would I need to be playing with the custom settings to get a brighter image or am I missing something obvious?

Can you be sure about your source viewing reference? Do you just notice 'a difference', or do you consider the DCP as too dark by absolute standards?

Did you actually test screen these DCPs in a cinema?
