A really needed set of capability would be a fully DCI and Library of Congress complacent DCDM generator that Formats a Drive to NTFS the places a baggit on it with all the md5 documentation.
This is a very much needed tool for small cinema creators and studios that receive public funding anywhere in the German speaking world at least and likely far beyond. This is such a hurdle to take and a huge expense even after you think you have finished the project successfully, the film was shown at festivals, in cinemas, or anywhere.
It would be great if it could accept a wide range of dsm files and deliver them as specified with an estimate of drive size needed. We don't get our drives back, they will stay in state archive and I don't see a point in being wasteful.
I would be happy to lend a hand in researching the specifications for this. There are already many GitHub projects that achieve many of the needed tasks.

Re: DCDM Generator for state funded cinema
Previous discussion about DCDMs has tended to come to nothing due to the specs always being rather vague or non-existent... but if the LoC has something they use, I can see how it would be worth making that easy/easier.
Do the specs exist anywhere accessible? If not, making that happen would probably be a worthwhile exercise in itself.

Hi,
The latest DCI specs are quite precise about DCDMs : https://documents.dcimovies.com/DCSS/re ... -1.4.5.pdf
Best,
Dan

In terms of precision "Left Blank Intentionally" feels wanting. There is a number of SMPTE STs that were updated in the last year or so on the matter.barber wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 8:35 pm [...]

I just want to voice an opinion (because they go around), that any DCDM application that is current needs to consider pDCDM (packed DCDM see: pdcdm.com) that benefits from the HTJ2C's mathematically-lossless compression. Look it up. It has its merits.
Edit:
Because, indeed, if we want to return to the original post, there is no point in being wasteful.
