3200x1800 in 2k or 4k ?

Post by elo »

Dear community, what would I export my original 3200x1800 footage to: 2k or 4k?
We don't want any upscaling changes in the material but the best resolution. Please only advise if experiences with the outcome in cinemas for this case. Thanks.

You either have to accept downscaling or upscaling. How is this meant to be presented in cinemas - only for select showings, or for a wider run?

Personally, and as an operator of a very good 4k projector, I would upscale this to 3840/2160 and create a 4k DCP.

If you are absolutely concerned about resolution, why would you even consider 2k?

Why did you choose these unusual project settings? What is the resolution/nature/codec of your original (camera?) footage?

My advice is to always stick to DCI compliant project resolutions in the first place.
A dsm should always be flat or scope or even a full 2k or 4k container.
These specs can be looked up and also come as presets in most daws. They are definitely in resolve.

If your creative vision calls for a different aspect ratio, always fit that within the next closest DCI spec. So this would be 1.77:1 which is 16:9. The final project output should probably have been 3840 by 2160 in the first place. That would be a flat 4K container with some pillar boxing. I have also already seen 3840 by 2160 dcps that ran with no issues, but there really isn't a reason to risk it. Just do 3996 by 2160 in this case.
