Burnt in subtitles shadow is cropped

Post by spiff »

Hi all,

One of my masters is for 4K DCP with burnt-in subs.
When I select burn in, the subtitles look good, howver the drop shadow is cropped.
It appears to be cropped to the main title bounding box. So any show pixel below the bottom text bounding box is cropped.

Settings are in the images attached.

Can you suggest how to fix this and not crop the shadows?

Best regards,
S

Hi, it seems to be just a bug (shadow was not taken into account when deciding how big a rendered subtitle would end up). I've fixed it locally and it should be better in 2.18.21. If you're in a hurry, let me know and I'll make a build for you to try.

Hi Carl,

It would be very helpful if I could receive this updated subtitles version today, if possible.
We need to master this DCP for Wednesday, 9th July.

Please let me know if this is not possible, so I can inform my client and better understand your timeframe.

Best regards,
Simon

Hi, apologies for the delay. I'm having some weird problems with my macOS build machine. I'll keep you posted.

Do you have the option to use Windows?

Thanks, Carl, for the work on expediting this!
My apologies that we are all MAC and Linux here.

I will test and confirm today.

All the best

Hi Carl,

Thank you again for the quick turnaround in supporting the fix for the cropped subtitle shadow.

Looking at the results with embedded subtitles and closed captions, I can see a difference between the two.
When making a burnt-in version, this is very different to the embedded. We have tried several methods to address these differences.
- opening the subtitles, editing and then closing them again
- matching the font + shadow settings as closely as possible
I am unable to match the burnt-in version with any of the embedded ones.

We are only after a default result, industry standard, if that is a thing.

Here are the results,
1. dcp-cc.png - good
2. dcp-cs.png - matching the cc - good
3. dcp-oc.png - shadow is offset further - not good

Please let me know if you need any further info.
I would ideally like to know how to match these so there is continuity for the mastering of the captioning.

Cheers,
Simon

Can you clarify what you are comparing here? Is it burnt vs. non-burnt subtitles when displayed in the DCP-o-matic player? Or something else?
