HELP for TV newbie - UHD to DCI-Flat

Post by terribletoaster »

Hi everyone!

every once in a while i have to make a DCP from a broadcast-show or documentary for a screening on the big screen.
There was never an issue with my workflow but this time, there is no time for any mistakes so i really need your help and experience to bullet proof what i am doing.

The documentary was shot and edited in UHD (3840x2160) 25p in REC 709 .- i have an UHD and HD master already with graphic overlay and burned in subtitels
The cinema told me, they need an DCI flat (1998x1080). I do not want the black bars left and right, so i was thinking of using Crop Top and Bottom 43 like in the screenshot from my testfile (not the file i am going to use later on).
So here are my question:
1. Should i use the HD or the UHD master for the DCP? (i was thinking of using UHD)
2. The cinema told me to use the Interop Standard although they know, that i am going to deliver a 25fps movie. Should i insist of using SMPTE? First i was like, they know there projectors but i do not have the time to redeliver because i get the audiomix so late.
3. Anything else i have to reconsider?

Thanks to everyone!

Do you have a chance to inquire the exact type of playback server or projector from them?

If you don't like the black bars, I would suggest to crop out top and bottom using the UHD master.

Interop in 25fps is fine, this is the only exception.

However, there may still be same very few servers in operation that do not support 25fps at all, namely, the old Dolby DSS100/DSP100. These systems support even SMPTE DCPs on latest software, but still no 25fps.

I you need to play safe by all means, create a cropped 2k flat DCP in 24fps from the UHD master, and accept the small slow down.

Thank you very much!
No, i have not the chance to inquire the type of playback server/projector but i got to talk to the projectionist and he confirmed i should deliver in SMPTE in 25fps.

So i did crop from the UHD master and i am waiting for the QC results.
Thanks again for helping me :)
