Closed captions. I'm lost.

Post by mjmandich »

Will somebody please explain to me where to start in order to generate closed captions in my DCP? The manual is not helping me. The Timed Text tab only includes open captioning, and when I click Closed Captions under the View tab, there is just a blank window that pops up. I have an .mov file of my film with closed CEA-608 captions embeded as well as a plain .mov. and a separate .srt file of my captions to work with. Where do I start? How can I make this work? Thanks.

I don't know about embedded CEA-608 captions, but first thing to try is to create a new project, add this mov file to it, then enable 'Use as open subtitles' under TimedText. That will show wether the embedded captions are detected and read/interpreted/displayed properly in the preview window. Once that is sure, you can change their mode to 'closed captions', assign a name and language to the track, and then they should show up in the closed captions monitor window under 'View'.

If DCP-o-matic does not see the embedded captions, you may need to load the captions from the SRT file, the try/apply the same settings to that track/file.

Let us know how you proceed!

The term "closed captions" gets used various ways. To be more helpful, could you describe what your goal is?

I went through the whole learning curve to (I hope) understand timed text in the DCP world and appreciate how frustrating it can be. I was able to get what I needed by using a .mov file and a .srt file.
