While looking through the settings of the player app, I selected the setting where the playback screen is on one display, and the controls are on the other. Now when I open the app, I see a black playback screen, and no controls or menus on any of my displays. If I type Command-O, I get a dialog box and can play a DCP normally, although without the controls or menus. Reinstalling both the main app and the player doesn't change anything. If there's keyboard shortcut to get to the preferences, I could use that to change back to the default configuration. But without access to the menus, I of course can't change anything.

Try F11/FN+F11.
It is also possible to edit the display mode in the config.xml file in your user Library/Preferences manually.
<PlayerMode>window</PlayerMode>
<ImageDisplay>0</ImageDisplay>
<VideoViewType>simple</VideoViewType>
There may be multiple prefs folders for the recent versions, you may need to find out first which one targets your current version.

Thank you , Carsten. Fn-F11 didn't reveal anything.
I'm not finding any preference files for DCP-O-Matic in either my user Library or in the Library folder at the top level of the Macintosh HD. Are they under some other name?

I don't have a second monitor connected currently, so I can't test myself wether F11/FN+F11 helps. It does get my notebook from full screen to window mode, though.
Also, I notice there IS a keyboard shortcut to access prefs:

Re: DCP-O-Matic Player Lost Controls
Getting to the preferences via the keyboard shortcut worked, and I was able to put things back the way they were. I suppose this counts as bug that should be reported, right? Is this thread sufficient for that, or is there some other way I should report it?

Does this happen every time if you follow the steps in your first post?

Re: DCP-O-Matic Player Lost Controls
OK, here's a clarification: if "Start player as" has "full screen" selected, then I get a black viewer screen with no menus. If "window" is selected, then I get the viewer with controls at the bottom and menus at the top of the display. If "full screen with separate advanced controls" is selected, then I get the black viewer on the main display, the controls on the HDMI display, and no menus.
The "Dual-screen displays" selection doesn't seem to cause any problems. I have menus and controls as long as "window" is selected.

Re: DCP-O-Matic Player Lost Controls
Wasn't sure whether to start a new thread but it seems my problem is related (if not identical) to this, apologies if you think it should be a new thread - happy to move it!
Using DCP-o-matic (2.18.11) on an M4 Mac, in Full Screen mode it works perfectly, but without the playback status etc.
When using Dual Screen mode with an external display/projector, I lose the menu bar on the primary (local) display (and therefore access to any settings other than via keyboard shortcut) which is frustrating, but not a real problem.
The bigger issue is that the external display still shows the top window chrome (albeit with only the "close" (red) button enabled) and, on occasion that window doesn't fill the screen. It's as if the application is putting the primary display into full screen mode (and removing the menu bar etc) whilst leaving the other screen (which is playing the DCP) as a window.

How much experience do you have with Mac OS screen/desktop settings? There are a lot of things that can or need to be adjusted on the system level.
