workflow to create an "alternateing eye" 3D dcp

Post by dermot shane »

i have 2x jpeg2000 seq, Dci4k_Full, xyz, one left eye, one right eye, and matching audio tracks
want to create an alternateing eye dcp

i have tried these options:
tagging both as "3d left" / "3d right", got a mono Dcp twice as long, no transcode, only re-wrap
tagging both as "alternate", it trancoded, and had an error message after wrapping, if this is the optimal workflow, i'll re-run and screen cap the error

any ideas are appreacated

You also need to assign the 3D property to the DCP under the DCP tab. Assigning left/right in source properties for each individual file is the correct way to identify separate sources, but the DCP as such needs to be created with the 3D property. The resulting single video MXF will then contain alternating L/R frames.

Super thanks for the super quick reply!

I think i did have the 3D check box ticked

is there a nameing syntax i need to follow? my files are named:
show_date_xyz_L
show_date_xyz_R

and so i can be clear.. the workflow is to:

set project / raster / frame rate
import file seq's and audio
tag each file seq as 3D left / 3D right?
check length and audio mapping
then hit make DCP?
nothing else?

when i did that i ended up with one eye, and then the other eye - one after another in a loooooong DCP

i'll try again ;-)

No, the filenames are irrelevant.

There are some tools to test wether DCP-o-matic interprets your settings and files correctly - the preview window will only enable it's 'left' vs 'right' display option when '3D' is ticked under the DCP tab. Also, after you selected 'left only'/'right only' for your source files, the Timeline view will display both video files in parallel , as opposed to sequentially for 2D.

Also, you should at first only try a standard 2k/24 fps 3D DCP. 4k and higher frame rates for 3D are possible now, but I guess not many people have tested these with DCP-o-matic.

Not saying that the DCP-o-matic version you try this with may not contain a bug, but I don't think so.

i've run out a number of 3D dcp's this week, this was the first time we tried alt

will run this test in a projector on Monday
