Simon - while it would certainly be 'nice' if burn-in and timed text would appear 100% the same in DCP-o-matic player - you need to understand that DCP-o-matic player is not a reference for timed-text rendering. Every projector/server is rendering timed-text with it's own unique software, there is no pixel-identical reference code for this. So, the shadow spacing will be different for every type of DCI projector or server (depending on which part of the projection chain is rendering the text). Same for italics or other supported timed-text effect.
Also, closed captions are not intended for being rendered on screen, and any text-effect is ignored by closed caption display devices.

Re: Burnt in subtitles shadow is cropped
Hi Carl,
We are using the EasyDCP player, comparing burnt-in versus closed.
I'm looking for some guidance to consistently create subs and CC.
In the DCP-o-matic player is there a way to show the CC and Subs over the image? Or is it just in the separate window on black?
Best regards,
Simon

With DCP-o-matic open captions are overlaid on the image, and closed captions in the separate window, hopefully to reflect reality. You can always set the "use as" choice in the text tool to open/closed so that they appear where you like.
As far as I know there is no standardised definition of what drop shadow should look like. If there is a consensus in production systems I'd be happy to move DCP-o-matic closer to it. I'm not sure about just following EasyDCP without also comparing it to the output of some real projection systems.

<sigh>
Again, CC are simply not meant to be projected over the image. So why choose/compare CC vs. open subtitles/captions appearance at all? This makes no sense.
