I then checked the VF box for both video and audio for the outer two pieces of content. Then created the VF. The VF DCP only contains the trimmed part of the english trailer, while the outer parts are referenced from the OV (german).

Thank you Carsten, that was really helpful!
I guess that the final result would be a bit bigger (containing the full German trailer), if one was to FTP it back from the cinema server, but it definitely saves space and ingest time when one wants to use both versions.
I am not sure that the method I had in mind would work, but all I need is to try.
The servers deal very differently with exporting VFs, or when they are drawn from the server. Some add the OV assets, some not. On our Sony, it depends on what you select for export, while through FTP, you get all the necessary assets, but not in a useful way, so you always have to make sure to draw OV AND VF, then get rid of unnecessary doubles (which can be very large). Not a big deal, but you really have to think before.
I understood what the problem is. It arises when you trim in the joint of the part
For example: there is a OV\DCP with a logo (reel_1), you need to assemble a VF, the logo remains and the sound changes. So, if you leave the logo (reel_1) and put the rest of the film (reel_2) back to back, it will be impossible to assemble the VF - there will be a error, or the inability to chekcbox "Use video of this DCP as OV and make VF"
DCP-o-matic does not allow to access content on the level of reels. DCP-o-matic will create reels when assembling a DCP, and it will show reel structure in timeline view, but so far, there is no way to handle individual reels in the GUI. You may trim the DCP exactly at a reel boundary, but that is not the same as cutting out a reel.
What could work is if DCP-o-matic would have a 'split CPL by reels' function. That could create individual content list entries for every reel, placing all exactly in sequence. That would not need to make fundamental changes to the GUI and content handler.
