Error: Cannot encode tile

Post by scottclouthier »

I've gotten the error code "Cannot encode tile" twice since I updated to the newest software version (2.14.26).

With the first title, the encode stopped about 10 minutes in. I was able to successfully finish it on the second try, but the resulting DCP had lots of video glitches (coloured "specks" in horizonal rows) and the picture dropped out a few times.

Today I tried again with a different video file and again I got the same error code. I decided to try converting the file from H.264 to ProRes 422 before I give it another go.

Has anyone else encountered this error? I've been successfully running DCP-o-matic on this machine (Core i7 6700 w/ 48GB ram) for over 2 years with good success. It's only recently I've encountered these consistent errors.

Is this on a local disc/SSD? To me, it sounds like a hardware (RAM?) issue. Are you sure the target disc is able to hold files larger 4GB? To exclude FAT32 explicitly.

Target disk is a 1TB SSD formatted HFS+.

Weird. Maybe upload the metadata file and a log?

I have only ever heard about corruption like this when there were hardware errors involved. And only very rarely, a few times on this forum or the mailinglist.

So, that is on a Mac? I was still running 2.14.25 on my Mac Book - I just installed 2.14.26 and ran a test of an h.264/MP4 encode to exclude an obvious error in the code - the encode ran through smoothly, no errors in the resulting DCP.

Hmm, as a test - could you try to reduce the number of encoding threads to 4 (I assume it was set to 8 before)? This is just to see wether overheating could be one possible reason, as it seems you are getting issues only after some time.

Trying again with 4 threads and saving to a different SSD.

If this works, I will try next time with 8 threads on the same SSD.

I'll upload the metafile and log if I have any problems this time around.

Thanks for the help.

Post by carl »

This is a strange one indeed; the error is from the JPEG2000 encoding library and I can't remember ever seeing it before, or hearing anybody else mention it.

Is it feasible for you to do some memory checks with something like memtest86?

I have not had a chance to test memory yet, but I ran it once more and again got the "Cannot encode tile" error (no crash this time though).

Here is the log from the latest attempt.

Welp, looks like I do have RAM issues.

Going to run the encode on a Windows machine I use as a Plex server. And order some new RAM sticks...

Thanks for your help.

With 48GBytes, there are certainly chances. For sure, with 8 computing threads, DCP-o-matic isn't nearly using it up, but, under heavy load conditions, which multithreaded J2K compression certainly qualifies for, data corruption may occur.

I don't know the actual RAM configuration of this iMac, but you may try to take some of the RAM out and may be able to find those that cause errors. But may be you already performed memtest/hardwaretest by now.
