Add Subtitles

Post by hein »

I received a DCP for screening. It's an 1920's film with french intertitles.
I have already the synced Subtitle translation.
Contractually I should use the excat DCP they sent me, meaning that I'm not allowed to make a new DCP with harcoded subtitles.
The DCP has no KDM.
Is there any way to simply add a Subtitle File to the DCP server?

Can I create just Subtitles to add to an existing DCP?

When you create a new project, there should be a button that says "Add DCP" or something of that sort. I would just press that, add in the DCP you already have, and then add subtitles as normal.

You wouldn't technically be "making a new DCP", just changing the subtitles...

The contract is a bit weird, on the other hand, they have no way to check what you actually did. They may think that by 'adding' subtitles by hardcoding, you would alter 'THEIR' DCP (if they sent you a copy). However, that is not possible technically. Whichever way you go, you can only create a 'new' DCP (unless you deliberately overwrite or delete 'THEIR' DCP).

So, what you can do is either create a NEW DCP, containing video, audio, and subtitles, or, creating a VF to the existing DCP, containing only the subtitles, and reusing video and audio from the original DCP. The latter probably comes closest to what the contract demands. It will still not alter the original DCP in any way.

At the end we decided not to take risks and we projected live synced subtitles.

Everything went well and the public was very happy... that's what matters, isn't it?

Thanks for all your help. It's being very usefull this forum.

Would you tell us how you did this techwise?
