Alpha testers wanted: DCP Cine Player

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working on a new DCP playback tool called DCP Cine Player, and I’m looking for people who would be interested in trying the alpha release and providing some honest feedback:

The player has been designed to be efficient and should run on nearly any reasonably modern computer. However, reliable full-resolution DCP playback will still require sufficiently powerful hardware, particularly for more demanding content.

This is an early alpha release, and I’ve included just about every feature I could think of. I’m not yet convinced that all of them need to remain, so feedback on the feature set would be especially useful.

I’d be interested to hear about:

Playback performance and reliability
Compatibility with different DCPs and computer configurations
Features that are useful, confusing or unnecessary
Bugs, usability issues and anything that feels incomplete
Features you think are missing

As this is alpha software, please don’t rely on it for critical or public playback without carrying out your own checks.

Please let me know if you give it a try. Any feedback—positive or negative—would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to help and test that. But does this only run on Ubuntu 26.04? I have several (Ubuntu based) Linux installations but I guess nothing newer than 24.04. And what are the minimal hardware requirements?

I am targetting 26.04 as it's the current and has the longest service life.
I have not tried it on 24.04.
if it installs I imagine it will work. if no dependency / library issues.

lhardware wise. it will run on anything as it's totally software based. dcp performance will be stipulated by the power of the machine. otherwise it will goto half then 1/4 res to try and keep frame rate.
otherwise MP4 and other media file formats will likely play on very low level PC's

my test machine is a $200 PC from Amazon some one gave me. it cannot play dcps at all but I spent a day making it play as best it could as an exercise on optimisation on the player.

my Dev machine is a 10 year old 6core with hyper thread and it plays most dcps. a modern hi end CPU should easily deal with typical dcp bitrates without a problem. but I don't have the money to invest in more test platforms. a major reason I am asking for others to try it out.

Unfortunately it didn't work at all. On 24.04 there were the missing dependencies. Then I made a fresh install of 26.04 (but with the Unity DE). When I open the file with GDebi and press install, just nothing happened. Sudo user of course.

Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS uses the GNOME desktop environment by default, so I’m unsure why you chose the legacy Unity implementation. It is not surprising that it may not work correctly in that environment.

This is designed as an appliance-style implementation for a specific base operating system. The application and its underlying platform are intended to work together. To achieve the intended appliance-like experience, you need to use the specified foundation.

Ubuntu Unity is an official flavor of Ubuntu. I don't like Gnome that's why I went to an other DE. But a software that not even run on the flavors...

This is to test the system, not your personal computer operating system. Load it, test it, blow it away. Then load whatever you like, ubuntu or otherwise.
When you install it select, appliance install. It should ask now. If not appliance, it will not do the changes to make a user that auto logs in and starts the application. If you select appliance it will.
