Creating 5.1 and DCP for cinemas with different channel orders

Post by NickWoolgar »

Hi all,

I have screenings coming up for a film in two different cinemas which apparently have two different channel orders for their 5.1

Cinema A:
L, R, C, Ls, Rs, Lfe

Cinema B:
L, R, C, Lfe, Ls, Rs

How do I handle this, regarding both the final 5.1 mastering and the DCP-o-matic output. Do I need two different DCPs? Or will DCP-o-matic somehow 'guide' them both to channel things properly, with idents for each channel?

The 'channel order' is managed by the sound processor unit and not from the DCP itself or the server nor the projector. The DCP delivers (via the server) an audio signal to the sound processor and that is responsible for the rest.

Someone probably gave an uninformed answer. I am sure that Cinema A uses the same channel order as Cinema B. Even if their speaker setup is somewhat special, the incoming channel order is the same, and the speaker channel assignment is done by the configuration of their audio processor.

Channel order of all mainstream DCPs is the same.

Thank you both for the replies, MUCH appreciated.

So you're saying to just create the 5.1 upmix in the standard L R, C, Lfe, Ls, Rs ordering and assign as normal in DCP-o-matic, and it'll be fine for both?

I'm obviously hoping to be able to test listen in both venues before exhbition anyway.
