SRT subtitles not synching with film

Post by danfrodsham »

Hi folks, I'm having trouble making a VF for subtitles. When I add the SRT file, it appears in the preview to have been added to the end of the film and extends the duration of the project, rather than overlaying the film. How can I synch this up? ( I also tried with an XML version of subtitles, but it's the same.) Also, DCP-o-matic doesn't appear to pick up on font and layout parameters from the SRT file. I'm on day 3 of trying to get this to work so any pointers would be gratefully received. Thanks.

For the timing, it sounds like you might need to click on the .srt file in the content list, go to the "Timing" tab and make sure the start time is 0.

For the font and layout parameters, maybe you are using some markup that DCP-o-matic doesn't support properly. Could you send me your .srt file? carl@dcpomatic.com

Thanks for that Carl. Yes, timing was the main issue. The SRT file I generated in HappyScribe had added one hour to the timecode, pushing it out of synch. It all lines up now that I've trimmed an hour fro the start time! However, the SRT didn't carry any font/shadow/positioning information that DCP-o-matic could read. So, I converted from SRT to XML using Subtitle Edit and that's done the trick! I certainly wouldn't recommend using HappyScribe again. It's good at generating subtitles, but there's something not right with the files it produces. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for sending the .srt file. I can't see any formatting information at all in there, so unless I'm missing something your subtitle tool just doesn't write this stuff to .srt exports.

Thanks. I'll chase this up with HappyScribe!
