Japanese subtitles vertical and horizontal simultaneously

Post by clundy »

Has anyone dealt with Japanese subtitles in which there are vertical subtitles on left or right that happen while simultaneously there are also horizontal subtitles as well? Was planning on doing PNG based subtitles due to font size issues. But now this extra wrinkle.

I guess it's pretty typical for Japanese subtitles to have these overlapping events in order to describe various things happening at the same time.
Many of them start from Lambda .cap files where there are 2 tracks in the file. I have seen this when loading the .cap into EZTitles.
I have read that DCI XML supports this sort of thing but I'm not 100% sure about it. Plus we're talking PNG not just text based XML.
Wondering if the XML has to be specially prepared to make this all work.

For me, the best bet would be to export from EZTitles and inspect the IOP or SMPTE DCI .xml file.
If something is not supported, EZTitles warns you during export.

I could find a mention on EZTitles' webhelp: https://www.eztitles.com/Webhelp/EZTitl ... panese.htm
There is a mention there on what formats support that feature.

Edit:
If you question was: If I want to create the subtitles without EZTitles, how do I go about it?
I would wait for someone with experience on the subject to respond.

I was mostly looking to see if anyone had experience with this type of subtitle scenario. Even if the XML looks proper with no errors, will it actually be likely to work properly on all theater servers/projectors? My understanding was many of them don't like when time out exceeds the next event's time in. In the end it would be SMPTE package, probably with PNG based subs.

I see and I understand why my input wasn't helpful.
I would write, for the record, though, that I have no bad experience with time overlapping subtitles that don't over-impose.
The small experience I have with those was totally fine.

Yet, I should mention that I am talking about text/xml subtitles and not PNGs. I would imagine that PNG subtitles' overlapping may be a completely different thing to handle.

Let's see what others have to contribute to the subject.
