DCP is close to bitrate limit

Post by alexm99999 »

Hello,
I have created a DCP based on a preexisting OV that was sent to me, but the problem is that the OV has a bitrate of 242Mbps.
The DCP is 4K.
Do I have to re-encode to lower a bitrate it to avoid issues or is that bitrate fine since it's 4K?

Thanks!

It depends in the application that created this DCP.
I assume you passed through the 4k J2K data through DCP-o-matic and did not alter the image content in any way (hence, no transcode/re-encode).
Can you look into the OVs CPL's header and check the application that created it?

A J2K stream at 241 MBit/s may break some server's playback engine. You may perform a full validation in the player, it will issue warnings regarding component bitrates.

In general, using DCP-o-matic, I would avoid bitrates over 200-210 MBit/s. Some older servers are not able to playback the spec 250MBit/s bitrate.

I once created a 235 MBit/s 4k DCP that played without flaws on our own Sony projector/server, but crashed the next day on an older Doremi server (of which quite a few are still in operation world wide).

If I was in your situation, I would re-encode this file. It depends also on if or how you may be held responsible for the turn out of potential playback issues.

The OV was made with ClipsterDCI 6.9.4.6
