Settings and metadata not the same when making a DCP VF

Post by dcpforever »

Now that I know what I can and cannot expect from DoM, I am looking at how to adjust a workflow that fits my working method.
As I have already explained, this consists of exporting DCP from Resolve and doing a validation test with EasyDCP Player, mainly because it is the one used as a reference by the distributors where I send the DCPs.
I exported a simple DCP with two reels from Resolve, which of course did not pass validation.
I imported the DCP into DoM, adjusted several options, and the exported DCP passed validation. Perfect.
Now I want to add English subtitles. New project in DoM, I import the DCP created by DoM, add the subtitles, and try to export a VF.
I can't because there are settings that are not transferred from the imported DCP. I have to manually re-enter settings that I had already set in the OV DCP.
After adjusting those fields again, I can make a VF. And then with the Combiner, I combine both DCPs to create a multiCPL DCP.
This new multiCPL DCP didn't pass validation the first time, but I was finally able to get it to pass. However, there were different recommendations (not warnings) for the CPL OV and the CPL VF, even though I tried to make the settings the same...

If I'm only making a VF with subtitles, shouldn't there be an option to copy the settings already established for audio channels, reels, markers, and metadata?

Maybe right-clicking on the DCP in the list and choosing "Set project settings from this DCP" is what you are looking for?

Okay, I hadn't noticed those options.
Perfect.
I ran a new test and used both options: copy setting and copy marker. Better, but it doesn't copy the metadata.
Metadata such as Chain, Distributor, Facility, Luminance, etc. is not copied. You have to re-enter it again.
EDIT: I did a third test, this time trying to be more precise, paying close attention to everything, and using consistent names. This time the workflow worked correctly and I didn't have to re-enter the metadata.

I see the metadata you mentioned is not copied from a DCP. Some of it is tricky as it's only included in the name of the DCP, but I fixed it so that luminance, studio, distributor and facility are copied over.

Well, on my third attempt, taking my time and trying to do things methodically, I didn't have to re-enter the metadata, so it seems that the options work.

Did you use the "copy from DCP" option, or the "copy settings from another project", though..?

I have used Set project DCP setting and set project makers from this DCP.

That makes sense as well, because the facility and distributor of a VF might be (and often is) different from the one that made the Original Version.
I am talking as a person that dealt with versioning of foreign OVs very often.

Admittedly, one may create their own OV and VFs, or multi-CPL DCP. But, even then, what info should be retained and what updated?
