Error with VF from CCAP OV

Post by dcpman1 »

Hi,

I made an OV DCP with closed captions, and then I tried to create a VF with open captions, but when I opened the VF in DCP-o-matic player and tried to add the OV, it did not work, and the player remained saying "Needs OV." I also tried to load the OV and VF in easyDCP, and I received an error message. I made VFs before from an OV DCP in DCP-o-matic, but the OV did not have closed captions in that case.

Did I do something wrong? I tried checking the "burn captions into video" box as well as trying it with that box unchecked, and I had the same issue both times. I tried troubleshooting with Claude, and Claude said the VF's CPL references different asset UUIDs than what's in the OV.

Not helpful, but why did you create an OV with Closed Captions in the first place?

Maybe you could post the XML files from your OV and VF DCPs, or send them to carl@dcpomatic.com ?

Thanks for sending the files. Something has indeed gone wrong with the VF creation - the picture and sound that it refers to are not in its ASSETMAP, and not in the OV.

Either there's another OV somewhere that you should be using instead of the one you sent, or the VF just needs to be re-made. If you want to remake it, perhaps you could tell us the steps you took to make the VF and maybe we can spot what went wrong.

I remade the VF and have the same issue.

Steps for making the VF (Windows):
-Added .srt file to Content along with the existing DCP
-Clicked Tools -> Version File...
-Checked Picture and Sound boxes under "Refer to"
-Clicked OK
-Clicked DCP tab
-Changed Name to [film name]_SHR-1_F_XX-XX_51-OCAP_4K_20251230_SMPTE_VF
-Clicked Jobs -> Make DCP
-DCP-o-matic creates DCP / says Transcoding -> OK
-opened VF in DCP-o-matic player -> says Needs OV
-Clicked File -> Add OV
-Selected the CC OV DCP
-DCP-o-matic player still says Needs OV

Can you attach the metadata.xml from your DCP-o-matic project, and the XML files from the DCPs? (or send them to carl@dcpomatic.com)

Hi, thanks for sending the files.

In the project you sent the metadata for, you have taken the DCP with CPL CPL_2fd5405b-4e6a-4d4a-acc6-a40f1b869456.xml as the OV and are making a VF, adding these 1981OC.srt as open captions. This all looks OK, except you've marked the captions to burn in, which means you can't make a VF (DCP-o-matic shouldn't allow it, but it seems it does...). The point of a VF re-using video is that the video is the same in the VF as the OV, which can't be the case if you're burning subtitles into it.

cpl_9c4c5231-9e60-4c14-9b26-6d1cc4087b05.xml looks like the VF made from this project. I would expect it to load into the player if you give the DCP containing CPL_2fd5405b-4e6a-4d4a-acc6-a40f1b869456.xml as the OV. However, you won't see your caption unless you remake the VF with "burnt in" unticked.

You also sent cpl_35e45a9d-4bd7-436d-86dc-cf5db4535b13.xml. Where did that come from? It seems unrelated to both the DoM project and the other CPL.
