What means "a powerfull computer"

Post by Tschovi1965 »

Dear all

We have a little art house cinema , playing mostly from BD/DVD/Stream but we always rely on the distributor and/or the availability on the market.

Now my intention with DCP was to have newer movies, (DCP with KDM). So downloaded DCP-o-matic, asked politely my favorite distributor to have a test DCP and so I can do some tests (first test a movie without KDM, second will be with KDM).

I downloaded the 90GB for a documentary movie that was in cinemas some years ago. I can start the movie but then the message appears:
"The player is dropping a lot of frames" Change the decoding or use a more powerfull computer.

So my question: What would be a powerfull computer?
What CPU, how many RAM, what GPU... anything else that would improve the decoding?
Lets say what is the min, what the ok-ish, what the best configuration? And I understand: the more, the better :-) but what would be realistic...
Thanks in advance

Carl has spent quite some work into DCP-o-matic player being usable for public screen playout, but I guess it is still a challenge.

Can you tell us the specs of your current computer?

I would think that a decent mid-of-the line Ryzen 7 machine would be sufficient. Currently, no specific high-end graphics card is required. 16GB RAM is sufficient.

Have you tested the 'OpenGL' display mode in Preferences/General?

There are also some bugs at the moment which means that this message happens more than it should (especially after stopping/starting). You could try setting it to "don't show again" and see how it looks to you.

AMD Ryzen 7 4800U
AMD Radeon
16GB Ram

The GPU is not exactly state of the art, however it has a decent MP4 decoding.

Have to try the OpenGL driver...
Thanks!
