Cannot use a specified font for the subtitles

Post by ChrissyBoy71 »

Hi everybody, i would like to use a specific font for my subtitles, so i loaded a .ttf file into the Font Window, but it's not used by the software, that continues to use the default font, even if i burn the subtitles into the video track.
Any suggestions?

Thank you

Hi Chris, perhaps you could tell us which version of DCP-o-matic you are using, and either attach the metadata.xml from your project here, or send it to carl@dcpomatic.com

Hi Carl, thank you for your answer.
My software version is 2.14.59. This is because when i upgraded to the successive version i had big problems so i downgraded immediately.
In attachment you can see the metadata.xml file of the project.

Hi Chris,

That version is over 3 years old at this point and as you can imagine it's quite hard to remember what relevant fixes there might have been in the mean time, and even if we found a bug it would be difficult to make a release based on such an old version.

What big problems did you have with the new version?

Some stupid things such as no more direct link to the folder you indicated for the project, when you click on the file or DCP button (to load a file or a DCP into the project). It's a small but significative thing.
Secondarily but more important, i had a lot of crashes during the DCP creations, and i could not tolerate it, because of the wasted time and the uncertainess in the workflow.
When i downgraded to the previous version the problem instantly disappeared

You can probably go back to the old behaviour by choosing "Same place as project" from the "Default 'add file' location" preference.

What form did these crashes take? Did you get any error messages from DCP-o-matic? Do you have any log files from failed runs?

Ok, this will be useful when i will upgrade to a new version.

I sincerely don't remember, because a year has passed since i had that problem. Now i have an important work to carry on to the end, then i can try to install a new version.

Maybe i can say, interpretating your answers, that normally DCP-o-Matic should use the font you specified in the Font window? And if not, there is a problem. Isn't it?

Thank you

Absolutely, judging by the metadata.xml you sent, you have set it up correctly. So unfortunately you have hit a bug.

It is not an easy bug to investigate, however. Even if a fix could be found, it would not be trivial to set up the required environment to build a Windows installer from code that old without running the risk of introducing new, unrelated problems.

I will install that version here and try out what you tried, to see how I get on.

I just tried this on 2.14.59 with arialbd.ttf from Windows and it works for me - on setting the font the preview display changes immediately. It's hard to say why it's not working for you.

Perhaps you could share the "log" file from your DCP-o-matic project and the .srt file (either here or carl@dcpomatic.com if you prefer).

You could also try copying arialbd.ttf from c:\windows\fonts and adding that to the project, just in case something is wrong with the .ttf you are using.
