Hi,
I also just upgraded to 2.16.58 on Mac OS Monterey and also noticed an issue with the subtitles being too high which I didn't have before...
(I always burn the subtitle when I have to put somes)

So I went back to version 2.14.59, and I no longer have this problem.
(The subtitle issue happens to version 2.16.3.)

DCP-o-matic 2.16.72 was released.
• Fix scaling of bitmap subs when the corresponding video is cropped (#2670).
So, if I understand correctly, this release should fix the problem I was having with BDs PGS subtitles?

I think there's a good chance - please let us know if not.

I am using version 2.16.79 and my feeling (corroborated by a few festivals that complained about this) is that the subtitles are positioned too high when they are placed in the standard position. Please see attached screenshot.

I can change the Y axis offset, of course, but I am wondering if this high positioning is a glitch or a feature.

Previously, I did not have this problem.

Thank you for any suggestion you may give.

Hi there,

I'm using version 2.18.34, and I'm experiencing the same problem as Cintoli!

This problem has been recurring since version 2.16.3; it didn't exist with version 2.14.59.
(See my previous message from Friday, June 13, 2014)

To achieve proper positioning, I have to apply a Y offset of -10%.

Will this problem be resolved? Or is it better to continue playing with the offset?

Thanks !

If your source is image subtitles, like the ones out of a BluRay, then Y offset may or may not be the solution, since there might be text aligned on the top and that would be on a weird positioning. You might want to look at scaling.

On your example, though, the subtitles on the HD aspect ratio are lower than the safe zone. If you want to screen on a specific cinema that you know that works, no problem. If you want to screen on all kinds of cinemas, where you don't know what the off-center throw is and how much of the original image has been cropped/masked, play safer.

Relevant in a way, irrelevant in many others:
Once (fall of 2022, I think) I needed to create really small subtitles, that would have been used by actors that would overdub a movie live (!!!).
The subtitles were (on purpose) very close to the edge of the specific screen, and -on top of everything- the movie had an aspect ratio of 2:1 on 4K.
I created the subtitles and (compressed) fonts on a program, but couldn't import the subtitles on DCP-o-matic without them being lifted and changed. An intervention that I am (mostly) happy with.
I ended up using another program to make the DCP.
Maybe it would worth an effort to check how DCP-o-matic would treat the subtitles now.

Hi,
I agree that the current default position and size are too high and too large for SRT sources. Most of the time I convert SRT files to SMPTE XML using a homemade python script. I'll post that workflow in the thread about subtitle custom positioning soon, as it is related to problems we have already discussed there.

When importing a srt directly in DoM, here are the values I usually set - along with an outline effect:
