New version test help

Post by carl »

Hi all,

To solve some long-running problems with verification failures of SMPTE DCPs (made by DCP-o-matic) with some distributors, the new candidate release 2.16.51 has a fairly significant change to its audio writing. In SMPTE mode it will now write 16 channels of audio in all cases.

It would be great to hear of any successes or failures of DCPs made using 2.16.51.

Thanks!

Is it just for 7.1 tracks or across the board? I just checked a trailer for "65" in 5.1 and it only had a six channel audio MXF

EDIT: the 7.1 track for the Super Mario trailer was a full 16 channels.

Yes, both trailers were SMPTE

Mario also had a DBOX track, "65" did not.

Just to be clear, these are trailers you made with DCP-o-matic?

Sorry, I should clarify that I was asking if the lack of all 16 channels was really the reason for QC failures, given that Deluxe's own process only creates a 6 channel file for 5.1.

Ah right. My question was more about whether new DCPs made with DCP-o-matic work.

It is possible indeed to make SMPTE DCPs with fewer channels. But to do that, as far as I can see, you need to choose whether or not to include all the new SMPTE metadata (audio subdescriptors and so on). If you omit that, it seems fine to have 6 channel MXFs.

At the moment I'm inclined to say that having an option for this in DCP-o-matic is confusing, so it now always writes the full metadata and 16-channel MXFs.

Hi Carl,
If DOM produce a audio mxf with 16 tracks, then the "cpl-meta:MainSoundConfiguration" field must have 16 symbols. Unused or silent tracks should have the hyphen symbol
Exemple : 51/L,R,C,LFE,Ls,Rs,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,- (for 5.1)
71/L,R,C,LFE,Lss,Rss,-,-,-,-,Lrs,Rrs,-,-,-,- (for 7.1 DS)
But version test 2.16.51 produce this string : 51/L,R,C,LFE,Ls,Rs.
Today Most 5.1 movies are made with 8 tracks and 7.1 with 16 tracks.( Including Deluxe)
