It is perfectly okay to create ANY content, no matter of full feature, short, or ads, with or without any marker, and with stereo MXFs. These misconceptions were among the reasons why I was against the options to offer these intermediate standards in DCP-o-matic from the beginning. When full SMPTE Bv.2.1 is not supported by the playout equipment, then choose Interop. If there is any reason not to use Interop, I would like to learn about it.

SMPTE 2.1 does not recognise stereo as a valid audio format (only mono, 5.1 or 7.1).

Can you point to where SMPTE 2.1 disallows stereo? It's explicitly mentioned in the application profile.
