This is "Device or resource busy" which I think is different to the permissions one.

User has done the permissions hack.

seems suspicious. No trace of an unmount attempt in the logs.

So /dev/disk8 is not mounted but /dev/disk8s2 is - i.e. we need to unmount it - but we don't try.
